When trying to lift more weights, or do more reps on your sets in order to progress in your workouts, things can come to a standstill. After all, you can’t expect your muscles to grow linearly and progress at the same rate all the time. With that being said, there are several methods and techniques that you can add to your workout routine in order to build more muscle and become stronger. Today, we are going to go over possibly the most simple, yet overlooked lifting technique by majority of lifters, than can yield great results when incorporated correctly.


What are paused reps?

Usually, when things sound too good to be true, it’s true — but with paused reps things truly are as simple as they seem! Lots of unexperienced lifters overlook paused reps because they’re more difficult and therefore won’t allow you to hit heavy weight for the same amount of reps as you could unpaused. When using momentum during your lift, things are often easier. However, paused reps enforce strict form and pure strength, as all momentum is cut from the lift as soon as you pause the bar. When pausing a rep, you’ll want to perform the eccentric, pause the bar in one spot for anywhere from 1-3 seconds, and then perform the concentric. As you pause your rep, remember to maintain tension on your muscle and not just let loose until it’s time to push, pull, or hinge again. Why will paused reps make me stronger?

Even though pausing your reps will be more difficult and won’t allow you to lift your 5 rep max for the same 5 reps as usual, it’s a great way to increase strength due to its increase of time under mechanical tension and strict emphasis on proper form. Lifting with proper form is the best way to increase strength long-term and ensure sustainability and longevity. Pausing will make every rep more challenging, but that’s exactly why you should do it. Adding the technique is also a great way to introduce progressive overload to your workouts without adding more weight.
