He was a police officer before becoming a professional bodybuilder. He attended his first competition in 1983 but earned his first trophy in 1989 at the NPC Mr California Championships. Before debut in professional bodybuilders competitions, he ranked 8 times in different amateur competitions.
He started his professional career by winning 1st position at the Ironman Pro Invitational in 1993. This year, he also competed for Mr Olympia and won 2nd place. From 1995, he earned the Ironman Pro four times in a row. He got the Arnold Classic four times. He also won the South Beach Pro Invitational, France Grand Prix, Night of Champions, and Hungarian Grand Prix. He ranked Mr Olympia eight times.
Arnold Schwarzenegger said about him that Wheeler was the best bodybuilder he has ever seen. Ronnie Coleman also considered him as the best competitor. This living legend announced his retirement in 2000 but he participated in a few competitions till 2003. The latest news is, he attended Mr Olympia again in 2017 and earned 15th place!

In 1961, he started to be trained under Kurt Marnul.
